A and A

Chicago Child Photographer: A and A

I’ve been watching these two grow up since they made their grand entrance into this world (okay, so I wasn’t there at the birth but I saw them pretty shortly thereafter) and I was so excited to see them again for their 1 year photos. Baby A and Baby A have grown into quite the adorable toddlers (I never doubted that they would for a second, mind you) with amazing little personalities. They were such troopers during our session which just-so-happened to be on the chilliest Saturday morning of the season so far. Watching A and A grow also meant that I watched Mommy and Daddy grow and change too…and it’s astounding, really. The amount of love surrounding the four of them when they’re together will take your breath away.

Miss C

Chicago Family Photographer: H Family

I have to say the following about this family:

1. Miss C is amazing.
2. The H Family couldn’t have been dressed more perfectly.
3. Mom and Dad were hysterical and so fun to work with.

Seriously, big thanks go out to all three of you. I had such a great time during our session. Miss C, thank you for being so fun to play with. Although we weren’t supposed to be in the grass, we got an amazing photo, didn’t we?

Thank You, Steve

Chicago Family Photographer - Steve Jobs

Yesterday this world lost one of it’s most brilliant human beings – Steve Jobs. You may be wondering why I’m putting this on my business blog and the answer is super simple…Without Steve Jobs, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing as well as I’m doing it. Plain and simple. Steve created powerhouse machines with stunning graphics, perfect for those of us in the visual arts industries. I edit on a Mac and I wouldn’t edit on anything else. I travel with a Macbook. I’m constantly on my iPhone. And my iPad has now become a portfolio of sorts, as well as a mobile office that fits into my camera bag like a hand in glove.

It’s not that I’m a brand snob (no, I haven’t preordered the new iPhone 4S yet)…I just prefer to work on the best that there is. Steve Jobs created that for me and I will forever be indebted to him.

Thank you Steve, for giving so many of us the tools to develop our passions. The tech world will never be the same.

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.~Steve Jobs

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Chicago Family Photographer - Shoots for a Cure

Happy October, everyone! As you may or may not know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Over here at Precious Things Photography, that means a lot.

You see, both sides of my family have been affected by Breast Cancer. My Mom and Aunt are both survivors, as is my wonderful Aunt-in-Law. I have seen what this devastating disease has done to many people and, as of this past June, I was scared that I was one of them.

I found a lump and I will never forget that feeling. I was sitting at my computer editing photos when I had an itch. As I was scratching, I felt a lump underneath my skin. I felt it and I said, “No way.” .. Then I felt it, then I said, “No way!” again. Without hesitation, I called my doctor.

Long story short, I saw my doctor who performed an exam and immediately wrote me an order for a mammogram. The technician performing the mammogram said that tissue on both sides looked abnormal, so she added on an ultrasound after the mammogram. Once all of the scans were done, the doctor came into the room and ordered a needle biopsy of just the lump that I had found underneath my skin. I wasn’t scared of the test itself. I was scared of what the outcome could be. The doctor took seven samples of the mass in my chest and sent them off to pathology. Those few days that I waited seemed like some of the longest days of my life. When I finally received a call from the doctor, I was relieved. The mass was benign…however, it was stil abnormal. She suggested that I have a mammogram done at least twice per year for the next few years to make sure that it doesn’t grow any larger.

Ladies, it is important to check your tatas regardless of your age. Early detection of breast cancer is so important! Stay on top of your self exams and mammograms by using the link below to send yourself email reminders. You can enter information for a monthly exam reminder and again for an annual mammogram reminder.

And one more thing…

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (and in honor of the fact that I’m running the Chicago Marathon this Sunday with the American Cancer Society’s DetermiNation team), I’m also announcing my affiliation with Shoots for a Cure!

Precious Things Photography is excited to announce a partnership with Shoots for a Cure (formerly known as Think Pink Photography). Think Pink Photography was founded in October 2007 to support individuals and their families who have been touched by breast cancer. We are a charitable organization that serves two main purposes – celebrating life and supporting the cause. Recently, we changed our name and our support. We now want to support ALL cancer patients, not just breast cancer.

Through our professional photographer network, we are helping cancer patients to celebrate life with charitable photography sessions. Individuals may choose to document their fight against the disease before or during treatment, or prefer to capture their victory by scheduling a session within 12 months after treatment is completed. Photographers world-wide are now available to donate time and talent to celebrate life and support the cause. There is no cost or obligation to the cancer patient. Clients participating in a Shoots for a Cure session will receive a complimentary photo session, as well as a set of 10 small prints from the session. They will also receive a discount on any additional portraits they wish to purchase, although there is absolutely no purchase required at any time.

To support the cause, we donate and fundraise for The American Cancer Society, Susan G Komen Foundation and have partnered with The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation. All funds generated through donations and various fundraising efforts are paid directly to The American Cancer Society, Susan G Komen Foundation or The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation in our name. As a 3-time breast cancer survivor, Danielle Beverly and her husband Eric joined together to form a foundation dedicated to promoting education, increasing awareness, and providing support and resources for families who have been touched by breast cancer.

Please subscribe to our blog (on the Shoots for a Cure website) and tell your friends and family about Shoots for a Cure. Awareness is everything and we can’t be successful without you.

I encourage you to view our website, make a donation, or hire a photographer that supports Shoots for a Cure! If you hire me, mention Shoots for a Cure and I will make a personal donation to the organization. If you, or someone you know, would like to schedule a Shoots for a Cure session, please contact me for details.

I am very proud to be a network photographer with Shoots for a Cure, and am anxious to get the word out about this amazing program. For more information, you can contact me, or you can visit the Shoots for a Cure website at http://shootsforacure.com!
